Sunflower Hearts Bird Food

Sunflower Hearts are simply Sunflower Seeds with the husk shell removed. Black Sunflower Seeds for example still have this shell on. Whilst they are a slightly cheaper seed, they don't represent as good a value as the birds will remove the shell (husk) and throw it away, meaning a lot of mess around your bird feeders.

Husk Free sunflower hearts simply means sunflower seeds without the outer shell. Our Sunflower Hearts are husk free, meaning the birds don't need to peel away the outer shell and hence they use less energy to eat this seed. That's extremely important, especially in the colder winter months.

Sunflower Hearts should be fed from either a seed feeder or a dedicated sunflower feeder. They can also be fed directly from a ground seed feeder, or on a bird table, although we'd recommend putting them into a feeder to allow different birds to feed at once. It also helps to prevent wastage and mess in your garden, as more seed will end up on the ground if you use a table or ground feeder.

Sunflower Hearts are ideal to be fed all year round. The high energy content makes them perfect for both the colder winter months and also the breeding season, when fledglings will be looking for food and energy is required for other things. We'd recommend supplementing your sunflower hearts during winter with suet products and during the spring months, consider offering a smaller seed such as sunflower chips, which are great for fledglings due to their smaller size.
